Via Montebello is located in the Castro Pretorio neighborhood, just a few hundred meters from Italy's most important train station, Termini Station. Castro Pretorio takes its name from the Castra Praetoria, the barracks built in 23 AD by order of Tiberius. It housed the Praetorian Guard, the bodyguards serving the emperor. Even today, the area on which the ancient encampment stood houses a garrison of the Italian Army, making it the oldest barracks in the world, with its nearly 2,000 years of history. Among the neighborhood's most representative sites, archaeological sites, museums and religious buildings are the National Roman Museum at the Baths of Diocletian and the National Roman Museum at Palazzo Massimo, which house the world's most important archaeological collection, the Moses Exhibition, the monumental fountain at the end of the Felix Aqueduct, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, the work of Michelangelo, Porta Pia, also a product of Michelangelo's genius; Via Nazionale, the elegant shopping street; the majestic Piazza della Repubblica, with the Fountain of the Naiads and the imposing porticoed buildings of architect Gaetano Koch; the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, a refined and modern temple of ballet and opera; and the Museo Storico dei Bersaglieri, which preserves the relics and memories of this heroic military corps. The district is full of typical stores and restaurants, pizzerias and other gastronomic specialties.
